The French Revolution was caused by many factors. This essay will argue that economic factors were important in causing the revolution. There were also political and social causes, but economics played a big role. France was in debt and the poor people were suffering.
France faced a major economic crisis in the 1780s. The government was in debt from wars, especially the American Revolution (Doyle, 2001). The king tried to raise taxes but this made people angry. Poor harvests in 1788 led to bread shortages. Bread prices went up and people struggled to afford food. This created unrest among the common people.
The tax system was unfair. The Third Estate (commoners) paid most taxes while nobles and clergy were exempt (Lefebvre, 1947). This created resentment. People felt the system was unjust. When the Estates-General was called in 1789, the Third Estate demanded change. Economic inequality was a major grievance.
